A valid XML document (document XML validates) is, according to W3C, a Well-formed XML document which also conforms to the rules of a Document type definition (DTD), or of a XML Schema (XSD) that W3C regards as an alternative to DTD.
One should not confuse this term with a Well-formed XML document, which is a Document XML which has a correct syntax XML.
