Old resistant, Valerie André (born on April 21st, 1922 with Strasbourg) is the first military woman to reach the rank of general, in 1976, as Doctor-General. In 1981, it is promoted Doctor-General Inspector. Pilot of helicopter, it is also founding member of the national Académie of the air and space.

It started as doctor-captain in Indo-China (1948), where it achieves 120 missions of war. It continues in Algeria, doctor-commander (1960), where it will rempliera 365 missions of wars then. It becomes to doctor-lieutenant colonel (1965) then doctor-colonel (1970). It adds up more than 3200 hours of flight, and counts 7 quotations with its Military Cross. She writes two books of memories: Here, Ventilator! Extracts of a notebook of vol. (Calmann-Levy, 1954) and Madam the general (Perrin, 1988).

She is also one of the five women Grand Cross of the Legion of honor, with Germaine Tillion, Genevieve of Gaulle-Anthonioz, Jacqueline de Romilly and Simone Rozès.
