Valentine of Boulogne

Valentine of Boulogne known as Valentine (1591-1632) of his true name Jean Valentine is a French painter baroque representing of the current of the caravagists.

Biography

Origins

Jean Valentine is the son of a painter and glass maker in which the family was originating in Coulommiers, since 1489. Family name refers to the town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, at the 18th century it is identified under the name of Moïse (or Moyse) Valentine, like Valentine de Coulommier. There exists a confusion on the birth date, in the death certificate there is mentioned to be dead with old 38 years but its baptismal certificate disappeared.

In Italy

It is supposed that Valentine was formed with painting in the workshop of his father before going to Paris or Fontainebleau and followed the teaching of Simon Vouet, that it admired and which he took as a starting point. It left then for Italy.

The first trace of the presence of Valentine in Italy is mentioned in the stati animates of 1620, whereas he lives in the parish of Santa Maria del Popolo. Before this date one can only speculate in his displacements and his activities.

While studying in Italy, Valentine was under the influence of the Caravage and Bartolomeo Manfredi. Painter of scenes of kind and religious table, it will make his career primarily in Rome.
