Valentine Serov

Valentine Aleksandrovitch Serov (in) (1865 with Saint-Pétersbourg - 1911 with Moscow) is a Russian painter

Biography

Valentine Serov is the son of Alexandre Serov and Valentina Bergman. His/her father, a large type-setter, plunges Valentine in the creative atmosphere of the Cercle of Abramtsevo as of childhood.

He lives at S.I Mamontov for long periods, knows many artists then, at the 10 years age, starts to study graphic arts and painting under the control of Ilya Repine (in Paris and Moscow) in the movement Peredvizhniki.

He is pupil with the academy of arts of Saint-Pétersbourg (1880 - 1885), where Pavel Tchistiakov will be its professor.

He was influenced by the realism of Repine and the strict plastic system of Tchistiakov. He was the friend of Mikhaïl Vroubel and later of Constantin Korovine.

From 1894 to 1899, he is member of the Association of the itinerant exposures of art, and as from 1899, he affiliates himself with the Association of the World of Article.

Admittedly, its portraits occupied the first place in its creative work, but it is inconceivable to recall the history of Russian art landscape designer without mentioning its landscape. In some of its first works, Sérov combines the kinds of the portrait and the landscape.

As from 1887, it exempts a teaching with the École of painting, of sculpture and of architecture of Moscow then, in 1903, he becomes full member of the Academy.

The artist leaves the rows of the latter to protest against the fact that one drew, the January 9th, 1905, on the participants of a peaceful demonstration.

He is a painter of order very appreciated by the good company. Many its portraits are those of artists then in vogue (Ida Rubinstein, Levitan, Diaghilev), of personalities of the imperial court, high bourgeoisies, the notable ones and their wives.

Sérov is a remarkable graphic designer and, during its last years, it makes achievements for the theater.
