History

The knights of St Jean of Jerusalem by their presence with Bellecombe reflect the aspect dominating of the history of the village. One can consider that Valencin was in the beginning a Gallo-Roman villa, (vast domain (or farm) which was directed by a Master, with under its authority a certain number of servants). Certain historians tried to find the origin of the name of Valencin. The oldest date found which mentions Valencin, is an act of 954 pennies the form of Valenciano. With the Middle Ages the way which crossed Valencin was a way of pilgrimage of Vienna with St Claude. Before the revolution, the canton did not exist and the village often quoted in the texts of the time like " the variation of Valencin" , was attached to mandement St Georges d' Espéranche since the arrival of the counts de Savoie.La plain of Lafayette was formerly " plain of Chanoz" , because of the forest of the same name. The legend wants that the name of Lafayette does not come from the word Fayard, common noun which indicates the beech, but of a character, the Marie General, Joseph, Paul, Yves, Roch, Gilbert of Mottier, titrated Marquis of Fayette. The former volunteer who had left to fight in Americas at the sides of Washington in 1776, came from Bourgoin. In 1829 in its honor a banquet of 1500 people was organized in the open air and in remembering, the inn which was built near this historical place taken the name of inn of the " Fayette".
