Valdivia is a city of the Chile, populated approximately 140.000 inhabitants, founded by Pedro de Valdivia. It is located at the south of the country, with the confluence of the rivers Calle Fixes, Valdivia and Cau Cau, in the Región of the Rivers.
It is the capital of the Province of Valdivia.
An administrative recutting is proposed in front of the Congress of Chile and could lead, if it were adopted, to make of Valdiva the capital of the Région of the Rivers, whose creation was proposed the October 19th 2005 by the president Ricardo Lagos. If this project is carried out in the long term, the new area would join together the province of Valdivia and the Province of Ranco.
Valdivia is the seat of the Universidad Austral of Chile, founded in 1954.
In 1960, Valdivia is devastated by the seism stronger magnitude ever felt followed by a tsunami.
