Valdemar Ier of Denmark (1131 - 1182), also known under the name of Valdemar Large the , reigned on the Denmark of 1157 with 1182.
His/her father, Knud Lavard - knight and very popular Danish prince, oldest son of Eric Ier of Denmark - was assassinated little before his birth, and his mother, Ingeborg - girl of Mstislav of Kiev - the prénomma in memory of his grandfather, Vladimir II Monomaque of Kiev.
Heir to the throne and whereas his rivals gained in being able, it was high at the court of Asser Rig de Fjenneslev with the son of Asser, Absalon, which became thereafter man and friend of confidence.
Whereas Valdemar reached its sixteen years, old King Eric III of Denmark abdicated and a civil war was started. The applicants with the throne were: Sven III of Denmark, wire of Eric II of Denmark; Knut V of Denmark, wire of Prince Magnus the Powerful one, itself wire of Niels of Denmark; and Valdemar itself, which held at least the south the grounds of Jutland. The civil war lasted ten years.
In 1157, King Sven organized a large banquet in the honor of Knud, Absalon and Valdemar, with a real aim to get rid of his rivals. King Knud was killed, Absalon and Valdemar escaped; Valdemar regained Jutland. Sven launched an invasion quickly, and was overcome by Valdemar. It is known as that Sven was killed by a group of peasants during the retirement, whereas it left the battle field.
Having survived all its rivals, Valdemar only became sovereign of Denmark.
In 1158, Absalon became Évêque of Roskilde, and Valdemar made its principal adviser of it. It reorganized and rebuilt Denmark, torn by years of war. On the initiative of Absalon, he declared the war with the inhabitants of Poméranie and the island of Rügen at sea Baltique. In 1168, Kap Arkona was taken by storm, the Wend people were christianized and submitted themselves to his new Danish suzerain.
Valdemar was pilot during its reign of the growth of Denmark, growth which reached its apogee under the reign of its second wire, Valdemar II of Denmark. Valdemar Ier died in 1182; it was Knut VI of Denmark which took the succession of the throne.
Valdemar married in 1157 Sophia de Polock (1141 - 1198), girl of Rahvalod Barysavič (leader of Bielorussia under Duke of Polock), and they had the following descendants:

- King Valdemar II of Denmark (1170-1241)
- Sophie, (1159 - 1208), married to Saxony-Altenbourg|Siegfried III, Count d' Orlamünde, Orlamünde being future composing of the duchy of Saxony-Altenbourg.
- Margareta and Maria, nuns with Roskilde
- Rixa/Richeza (deceased in 1220), married with King Eric X of Sweden
- Helen (deceased in 1233), married to William of Lünebourg
- Ingeborg (1175-1236), wife of King Philippe II of France
