Valcarlos

Spanish Valcarlos in or Luzaide in Basque (officially Luzaide-Valcarlos ) is a commune of Navarre in the north of the Spain.

Geography

The commune is located in the middle of the Navarrese Pyrenees.

History

The city was called Luzaide (name preserved out of Basque) before taking, at the 12th century, the name of Valcarlos, “valley of Charlemagne. ”
Two relay-hospitals are mentioned there as of 1271: the Irauzketa house with the thick walls corresponds to the old hospital Saint Jean d' Irauzketa, close to the current church and Gorosgarai, higher in the rise, pertaining to the monastery of Roncevaux.
Put of Reclusa was an inn for the reception of the pilgrims.
In 1366, it is mentioned a strengthened tower Erredorea which was not to let pass any foreigner, was it pilgrim.

Although located in Navarre, the geographical location of Valcarlos makes that the Basque spoken historically in Valcarlos is to be classified in the Western Low-Navarrese as in the Low-Navarre town of Baïgorry in .

The pilgrimage of Compostelle

The village is located on the way of the Pèlerinage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle on the Camino navarro .
One comes from the Col of Roncevaux, the next commune is Roncevaux and Real colegiata of Santa Maria.
