Valéran II of Nassau , born in 1220, deceased the January 24th 1276.

He was Co-count de Nassau of 1249 with 1255, count de Nassau-Wiesbaden, count de Nassau-Weilbourg, count de Nassau-Idstein of 1255 with 1276.

Family

Oldest son of Henri II of Nassau and Mathilde de Gueldre.

In 1250, Valéran II of Nassau married Adélaïde von Katzenelnbogen, (girl of the count Thierry von Katzenelnbogen)

Four children were born from this union:

  • Thierry de Nassau (deceased in 1307), archbishop of Trier of 1300 with 1307

  • Mathilde de Nassau

  • Richardis de Nassau (deceased in 1311), it entered an religious order

Biography

the December 17th 1255, Valéran II of Nassau made the decision to share the various possessions of Nassau between his/her Otto brothers which accepted the Nassau-Siegen, Thierry de Nassau accepted Pfaffenhofen, Niederlahnstein and Vallendar. Concerning Valéran II of Nassau, this one kept the following possessions: Lahn, Wiesbaden-Idstein, Weilburg, Sonneberg. This division of the possessions caused for the centuries to come political and geographical separation from the two lines of the Maison of Nassau.

Valéran II of Nassau is the ancestor of the large-dukes of Luxembourg.

Reached mystical insanity, he died the January 24th 1276.

Valéran II of Nassau belonged to the first branch of the Maison of Nassau known as Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstei which died out in 1605 with the count Jean Louis II of Nassau. Valéran II of Nassau founded the Valramienne line. This line was divided in other branches of which two became principalities.

In 1806, it remained two lines of the stem valmramienne which were high in duchies. After the Congress of Vienna the principalities of Nassau were joined together.

In 1866, the State de Nassau was integrated by the Prussia and became the province of Hesse-Nassau.

Valéran II of Nassau is the ancestor of the family of Nassau-Weilbourg whose representative is the current one of the large-duke of Luxembourg, Henri Ier of Luxembourg.
