Vaivara (concentration camp)

The concentration camp of Vaivara was located in the district of Vaivara in Estonia.

Estonia was occupied since 1941 by the German troops. The camp was open in September 1943 as a camp of transit towards the 27 camp appendices which it served of which that of Klooga. Approximately 20.000 deportees forwarded there, for the majority of the Jews coming from the Ghetto of Vilnius and Kaunas. The S eliminated those considered to be inapt for work; the others were subjected to the forced labor.

The majority of the deportees of Vaivara were moved in front of the projection of the Red Army in the camps with Stutthof or Auschwitz. Those which remained were released the June 28th 1944 by the Red Army.
