It was the Trogue-Pumped fatherland of the historian .

The invasions Barbare S of the 5th century ruin the city. The fatal rising of the Ouvèze in 1992

The rising of September 22nd, 1992 proceeded during the risings of autumn which can occur on the Mediterranean rivers of medium mountains. This important weather event, seems to be amplified by the modes of occupation of the ground and management of the beds of the rivers. The history and the geomorphological analysis state indeed that the Ouvèze already knew risings as important as that of September 22nd, 1992. It is characterized by its short duration and its intensity. Indeed, in four hours of time, it fell according to the places, between 300 mm (with Entrechaux) and 143 mm (with Boxwood-the-Baronnies) and 179 mm with Vaison and 215 mm with Malaucène. Moreover, it hardly ran out five hours between the flood and the starter of the fall.

All the night and during several days, the first-aid workers affairer will find the victims. But this rise of water will remain marked forever by the human losses: 37 deaths including 3 in Séguret; 4 missings (of which a body found in November 1993). The material losses amount as for them to 500 franc million.

Architectural Patrimone

Vaison-the-Roman is a classified medieval city town of art and history.

It is also a city Archéologique where a Roman city could be discovered in its quasi totality. It includes/understands the House of Messii, the Gantry of Pumped, the House of report/ratio ( Insula ), of the thermal baths and the Roman Théâtre.

the castle of the Counts de Toulouse: Camped at the top of a rock with peak, the castle of Vaison, was during centuries, a powerful fortress of Comtat Venaissin. Built in 1195 by Raymond V, Count de Toulouse and Marquis of Provence, it replaced a tower destroyed by the bishop Bérenger de Reilhane. The bishop did not manage to drive out by excommunication the workmen employed by the count Raymond who ignored the episcopal lightnings and the strong Château dominated soon the city. The castle amputee of its sound and means of defense Donjon decapitated preserves beautiful buildings. He points out the fights which opposed the usurping counts and bishops their rights. Alphonse of Poitiers, brother of Saint Louis, which had married the girl of Raymond VII, imposed on the bishop S the restitution of these same rights while making deliver an award on December 30th 1351.

the cathedral Notre-Dame : It illustrates various phases by which the Christian art passed since its origin until the 15th century and lets predict of a certain size of the city until the Moyen-âge. The time mérovingienne, the Romance and the Gothic is côtoient there. Its interior is elegant and the Architecture is noble but its decoration was ransacked by two of its bishops who to enrich to them episcopal Palais acted as vandals. One stripped of sound Jubé and the other removed with the chorus its marbles. The Abside with decoration in ancient columns remained to us about intact. Arched out of small apparatus, she points out the primitive church mérovingienne. Its two absidioles accompany it and are contemporary for him. In that of north, a tabular furnace bridge, richly decorated, passes to be the most artistic part of the cathedral. In 1897, it becomes parish church.

the cloister : On the left chorus in the absidiole one reaches the cloister. It is one of most beautiful of the Romanesque art. Its geminated arcades, its posts are of a completed artistic nature. Built at the 10th century by the canons of the chapter, it was repaired by the bishop Joseph Marie de Suarès, at the 17th century and completely restored at the 19th century by Mr. Revoil, departmental Architecte. Of square form, it contains four arched galleries decorated with cornices and on which formerly the doors opened communicating with the cells of the Chanoine S which were contiguous.
