Vaige

The Vaige is a French Rivière which runs in the departments of the Mayenne (53) and of the the Sarthe (72).

Geography

It takes its source in the commune of Saint Leger. It sprinkles Vaiges, Bazouge-with-Chemeré, where it forms a pond, Cropte, Beaumont-Foot-of-Ox, is useful, on a course of several kilometers of limit between Mayenne and the the Sarthe, and joined the the Sarthe with Sablé-sur-Sarthe, not far from the confluence of this river with the Erve.

Hydrology

Vaige is a river poorly abundant, like the majority of the rivers of plain of the area catchment of the Loire and in particular south of the departments of the Mayenne and the Sarthe. Its flow was observed over one 28 years period (1980-2007), with Bouessay, locality of the department of Mayenne located at very little distance to the north of Sablé-sur-Sarthe, i.e. little before its confluence with the the Sarthe. The catchment area of the river is there of 233 km ², that is to say it quasi totality of this last.

The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Bouessay is of 1,48 m ³ a second.

Vaige present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow marked enough, with high waters of winter-beginning of spring carrying the average flow monthly with a level located between 2,52 and 4,09 m ³ a second, from December to March included (with a maximum Net in January), and prolonged enough low waters of be-autumn, from June to October included, with a fall of the monthly medium flow up to 0,121 m ³ in August, which is very low.

With the low water level, the VCN3 can fall until 0,001 m ³ a second, in the event of dry period quinquennial, that is to say 1 small liter a second, and the river is found consequently almost dry, which is of course very severe. The VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

As for the risings, they can be rather important, characteristic shared by the majority of the affluents of the Loire, but particularly marked for the affluents of the Loire located at the west of the basin of this last (Creuse, Anglin, Gartempe, Mayenne, Sèvre Nantes or Oudon).

Thus the QIX 2 and QIX 5 or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising are worth respectively 24 and 32 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 46 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 is of 54 m ³, while the QIX 50 is assembled to 65 m ³ a second (see note).

It can be interesting to compare the QIX 2 and QIX 10 of Vaige with those of the Anglin, river considered for its important overflows, and by taking account of their extremely different dimensions of basin. Whereas the QIX 2 of Vaige is assembled to 24 m ³ a second, that of Anglin is of 210 m ³ (for a higher medium flow of almost 9 times that of Vaige and a surface of basin 7 times wider). As for the QIX 10, that of Vaige being of 46 m ³ a second, it is assembled to 400 for Anglin. One concludes from it that the risings of Vaige are proportionally hardly less important than those of this dreaded river, affluent of Gartempte and dreaded for its risings.

The recorded maximum instantaneous flow with Bouessay during the period of observation, was of 49,8 m ³ a second on January 14th, 2004, while the value maximum day laborer was of 43,5 m ³ a second the same day. By comparing the first of these values on a QIX scale of the river, one notes that this rising was hardly of a vicennial nature, and thus intended to rather frequently reproduce.

Vaige is not a very abundant river, but it is extremely irregular. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 201 millimetres annually, which is definitely lower than the overall average of France all confused basins, and also to the average of the basin of the the Loire (244 millimetres), but equal to the average of the basin of the the Sarthe - excluded Dormouse - (201 millimetres with Saint-Denis-in Anjou). The specific Débit of the river (or Qsp) posts of this fact a rather weak figure: 6,4 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
