Vagn Walfrid Ekman
Vagn Walfrid Ekman (May 3rd, 1874 – March 9th, 1954) was a oceanographer Swedish born with Stockholm, wire of Fredrik Laurentz Ekman, itself oceanographer. He studied the Physique with the Université of Uppsala where he directed himself towards oceanography following a presentation of Vilhelm Bjerknes in connection with the Dynamique of the fluids.
During the forwarding of the ship of research Fram , Fridtjof Nansen observed that the Iceberg S did not derive with the Vent but with an angle from 20°-40° from this one. It invites Ekman, still a student, to concentrate itself on this problem in 1902. This last discovers that this behavior is due to the balance between the Friction which transmits the movement of the air to water, the Viscosité of this medium which transfer the movement downwards and the Force of Coriolis due to terrestrial rotation. Ekman publishes its theory which is known thereafter like the Spirale of Ekman. The latter also applies to the atmosphere by adding the compressive force. It is an important component in Météorologie.
After having supplemented its doctorate in 1902, Ekman joint the International Laboratory for Oceanographic Research of Oslo where he works during seven years in theoretical and practical oceanography. One owes him inter alia the courantometer of Ekman and the Bouteille of Ekman. Of 1910 with 1939, it is found with the Université of Lund as professor of mechanics and mathematical physics while continuing its research. He is elected member of the royal Académie of sciences of Sweden in 1935.
In addition to are work, it impassions itself for the music. He is a player gifted amateur of Piano, sings like low and composes. He dies in Gostad close to Stockaryd in Sweden, always an Enquiring .
