The maple silver plated (or Acer saccharinum , called silver maple in English) is a tree of the families of the Acéracée S.

Origin

It is a tree originating in North America and introduced in Europe in 1725. It is frequent in the parks because it supports the atmospheric pollution of the cities well. It pushes in a wild state in the wet valleys and along the rivers.

Bark

The bark gray is silver plated. Tender wood is appreciated little. The system of roots is not very deep and fibrous. It extends in width much more than in-depth.

Foliage

The foliage is null and void, with sheets with 5 lobes deeply cut out green and silver plated above in lower part, yellow or red in autumn (according to the temperature). The petiole is green and/or pink length from 5 to 15 cm.

Flowers

The greenish yellow flowers appear at the beginning of March.

Fruits

The fruits are long winged disamares from 4 to 7 cm in angle obtu, blackberries as of May/June. They are not preserved and must thus be sown immediately. They often serve as the first spring foods with the animals of the forest. The tree starts to produce fruits as from 10 years.

Growth

The growth is fast. The tree can be harmful if it is planted close to a house.

Life expectancy

The life expectancy is 150 years.

Height

The height is of 20-30 Mr.

Plantation

The plantation is carried out in autumn.

Multiplication

The multiplication is done by Semis in May (just after harvest), or by Bouturage in June - July.

Ground

The silver plated maple appreciates a ground well drained, rather argillaceous, to avoid limestone. It can tolerate temporary floods.

Exposure

The silver plated maple appreciates the sun, or the semi-shade. It is rustic and resists until -30°C.

Distinguishing marks

The branches are breakable. The silver plated maple resembles much Acer rubrum but is different with its sheets larger and silver plated in lower part. In addition the branches are slightly falling down.
