Vaduz is the Capitale Liechtenstein, the seat of the government of the Principality and the place of residence of the princely family. The city shelters also the seat of the Archbishop's palace of Liechtenstein and constitutes an international money market. It counts approximately 5.203 inhabitants (December 2006) and extends on 17,3 km ²; it is bordered by the the Rhine.

History

The name " Vaduz" is mentioned for the first time in 1150 and would come from avadutg in Romance language which means “aqueduct”. Since the middle of the 14th century, the castle of Vaduz was the seat of the counts of the same name. In 1719, the county of Vaduz and the community of Schellenberg link themselves to form a principality which takes the name of Liechtenstein. Since 1723, the latter obtains the right to sit and vote with the Reichstag (Parliament of the Germanic Roman Holy roman Empire).

Policy

The mayor of the city east Ewald Ospelt (FBP) since January 2007. Gemeinderat, which is elected for four years by the people, counts 12 members: six of the patriotic Union, five of the Left progressist the citizens and one of the free List.
