Vacon (river)

The Vacon is a small French river of Lorraine which runs in the Département of Meurthe-et-Moselle. It is an affluent of the Vezouze out of left bank, therefore a tributary of a tributary of the the Rhine by Vezouze, the Meurthe then the the Moselle.

Geography

Vacon is born in edge from the forest from Large Gutter, with the foot of the Massif of the Vosges, with Petitmont (altitude of more or less 400 meters). After some meanders, it is directed towards the North-West, head office which it maintains throughout its course of 13,5 kilometers. It is thrown in the Vezouze (left bank) in extreme cases between the communes of Barbas and Blâmont, with 20 kilometers with the north-north-east of Baccarat.

Common crossings

Vacon bathes the communes of Petitmont, Parux, Nonhigny, Harbouey, Domèvre-on-Vezouze, Barbas and Blâmont, all located in the Département of Meurthe-et-Moselle.

Hydrology

Vacon is a very irregular river, following the example its neighbors, in particular Vezouze. Its flow was observed during one 38 years period (1969-2006), with Barbas, locality of the Département of Meurthe-et-Moselle located little before its confluence with Vezouze (ref.: ). Surface thus studied is of 35,4 km ², that is to say almost the totality of the catchment area of the river which extends on 36,5 km ².

The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Barbas is of 0,468 m ³ a second.

Vacon presents seasonal fluctuations of flow extremely marked. The high waters occur in winter season and are characterized by average monthly flows going from 0,70 to 0,93 m ³ a second, from December to March included (with a maximum very Net in December). From the end of March, the flow drops throughout spring to low waters of summer. Those are held July at September included, involving a fall of the average monthly flow to the floor of 0,071 m ³ in August. But these monthly averages occult fluctuations much more marked over short periods or according to the years.

With the low water levels, the VCN3 can fall until 0,011 m ³ a second (11 liters) in the event of dry period quinquennial, which is very severe, the river being then tiny room to some filaments of water. But this fact is frequent among the rivers of the Lorraine plate (see note).

The risings, as for them, can be very important, taking into account of course the exiguity of the catchment area. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 are worth respectively 15 and 20 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 24 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 of 27 m ³, while the QIX 50 is assembled to 31 m ³ a second (see note).

The recorded maximum instantaneous flow with Barbas was of 31,9 m ³ a second on July 8th 1987, while the value maximum day laborer was of 16,6 m ³ a second on October 29th, 1998. If one compares the first of these values on a QIX scale of the river, one notes that this rising of July 1987 was of order cinquantennal and thus rather exceptional.

Vacon is an abundant river among the rivers of the Lorraine plate in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 418 millimetres annually, which is definitely higher than the overall average of France, all confused basins, and also with the average of the basin of the Vezouze (385 millimetres). It is almost equivalent to the basin of the Meurthe (425 millimetres); it is on the other hand slightly lower than the average of the French basin of the the Moselle, which profits from very important Vosgean precipitations (445 millimetres with Hauconcourt downstream from Metz). The specific Flow (or Qsp) reached the rather robust figure of 13,2 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
