The first titanium ingot was molten with Verkhnyaya Salda in 1957, but as of the end of the year 1970, the factory became one of the largest world producers of ingots and of profiled out of titanium alloy. At the end of the years 1980, Russia came to place top of the list of the world suppliers of this metal. At that time group VSMPO took seat among the companies best equipped Russian complex militaro-industrialist. Group VSMPO-AVISMA became the metal leading vendor for the majority of the aerospace projects: commercial aircraft You-154, You-204, It-86, It-96 and Year-124, helicopters of the Semi family, military aircrafts of the ranges Known, MIG and You. Businesses

At present, consortium VSMPO-AVISMA is the leading vendor of titanium alloy parts for companies as famous as Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, Goodrich, Snecma Moteurs, Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney and others still. The consortium also delivers titanium to companies of other sectors of industry: mechanical engineering for chemical industry, energy production, of which nuclear energy, manufacture of implants chirurgicaux.
On the Russian market, VSMPO-AVISMA entirely meets the needs for the aeronautical companies, armaments and mechanical engineering in products containing titanium. The consortium for a long time remains the reliable partner of more than 1000 companies in Russia and elsewhere, of which Sukhoï, JSC KNAAPO, IRKOUT, Aviant, UMPO, Salut, Saturn, PMZ, Motor Sich and others still. Consortium VSMPO-AVISMA is certified by almost all the world producers of aerospace materials. It is the only Russian company to have more than 250 international certificates of qualité.
In August 2006, VSMPO-Avisma and Boeing signed a cooperation agreement up to 2030. Under the terms of this document, Boeing will buy to the Russian metallurgist articles and materials for a total volume going up to 18 billion dollars. While being based on the existing agreements, VSMPO-Avisma thus intends to carry the volume of its deliveries to the American aeronautical manufacturer to 36 billion dollars. The American airframe manufacturer Boeing and producer the Russian VSMPO-Avisma titanium created last August a common company of aeronautical components, whose Russian president Vladimir Poutine openly was pleased in a context with tensions with Washington. This co-operation between the American giant of aeronautics and the world leader of the production of Titane aims at manufacturing titanium components for the future Dreamliner, according to the agency Interfax. The common company will be held with equality by the two partners, who will invest there 60 million dollars to the total.
Boeing and VSMPO-Avisma had signed a letter of intent in April for the creation of the joint-venture. The components must be produced with Verkhnyaya Salda, in the the Ural, and their completion carried out in a factory of Boeing to Portland (Oregon). The company should sell components of a value from 250 to 400 million dollars according to the number of Dreamliner which will be sold in the world, 10% of the fuselage of Dreamliner will consist of Russian Titane. VSMPO-AVISMA is also the leading vendor of titanium for the principal rival of Boeing: the aeronautical giant European Airbus. Its heavy long-distance carrier of 420 tons, A380, lands on a landing gear whose horizontal titanium beam longest of the world, is manufactured by stamping with the factory ouralienne. No other company is able to provide parts of such dimensions. Their quality is ensured by the fact that they are manufactured using the material of the most powerful forging and most powerful of the world. In 2007, a new project will be launched by Airbus: a350 plane, for which the metallurgists of Verkhnyaya Salda will provide pressed parts.

Recovery by the state

The chief of Rosoboronexport, Sergueï Tchemezov announced the operation closure of purchase by the exporter of Russian armaments of 66% of the authorized capital of VSMPO-Avisma.
Commenting on, with the beginning of the year, the rumors on the interest of Rosoboronexport, Vladislav Tetioukhine, joint owner and managing director of VSMPO-Avisma, a participation of the State in its company had admitted which was not however to be dominante.
Now, Mr. Tetioukhine does not have any more but 3,88% of the actions of his company. As an argument making it possible to explain the reasons for the sale of its company, he had announced that the company required for a billion dollar to develop and that it could not do without the support of État.
In the opinion of expert of the branch, the contract benefits Rosoboronexport initially, because an important part of the receipts of VSMPO-Avisma (750 million dollars per annum) is generated by the titanium sale abroad, initially in Boeing and Airbus.
" The risks will increase for the investors, estimates an analyst of the finance company Ouralsib, Dmitri Smoline. VSMPO-Avisma is a stable company but there is a risk that it is amalgamated with other companies whose businesses do not go as well. In addition, the change of management returns the policy of the dubious company, which will have a negative effect on the investors, the more so as its action is already with low on the marché".
