V.92 is a recommendation of the UIT-T, which establishes an improvement of the standard V.90 for the telephone Modem S. This new standard allows a speed of transfer of 56 kbit/s downstream and 48 kbit/s upstream. V.92 was presented for the first time in August 1999 and was approved in November 2000.

Innovations of the standard

Fast connection ( Quick connect )

Reduced time necessary for this connecting to Internet at approximately 10 seconds instead of more than 20. Quick connect functions by storing the information of connections established at the preceding sessions and by re-using them in following connections.

Setting on standby

One can now suspend his connection to Internet, to make a phone call for example, then to take again connection.

PCM upstream

PCM is now used in the remote loadings upstream, which increases theoretical speed with 48 kbit/s.

V.44 compression

V.44 replaces the old standard of compression V.42bis. This new standard improves the data compression in the transmissions from 10 to 120%.
