Vũng Tàu or Vung Tau, in the past Cape Saint-Jacob , is a city of Vietnam. Population in 2005: 240,000. It is the chief town of the Ba province Ria-Vung Tau and is a famous tourist destination in Vietnam. The surface of the city and 140 km ², including 13 districts urbans and a village.

History of the city

The city is located at the south of Vietnam, at the end of a small peninsula. It always ététraditionnellement has a significant seaport, particularly for the period of French colonization. The French governor of Indo-China, Paul Doumer (which later became the President of the French Republic), made there build a manor ( the White Villa , in Vietnamese: Bạch Dinh ) in the Cape Saint-Jacob which remains always a prominent reference mark of the city. The village of Vung Tàu was founded in 1822 by the soldiers of king Nguyên and their families. The king gave to the soldiers the ground in reward to have released the infested area of Malayan pirates. The town of Vung Tau was rested by the French governor under the name of Cape Saint Jacques .

During 14èmes and 15èmes centuries, the site of current Vung Tau was a marsh which the European commercial boats visited regularly. This is why it was then called Vũng Tàu (means: anchoring). Vung Tàu has also a religious interest. The most remarkable monument in the city is a large statue of Jesus, built on a top of hill by the Catholique minority of Vietnam. The pagoda of Thich Ca Phat Dai and Niet Tinh Xa the temple, two Buddhist sites, are also significant, attracting pilgrims around the country.
