Vétheuil

Vétheuil is a common French, located in the department of the Val-d'Oise and the area Île-de-France.

Its inhabitants is called the Vétheuillais and the Vétheuillaises .

Located in a curve of the the Seine, the village is famous to have been the framework of the stay of Claude Monet, painter impressionist who painted approximately 150 of his works there.

Geography

The village is located in the French Vexin, its houses are staged with the side of the slope dominating the the Seine, to approximately 60 km in the North-West of Paris.

The territory of the commune is classified in natural zone of landscape interest, ZNIEFF (natural zone of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest), in ZICO (zone of Community interest for the birds) and also in site Natura 2000. The richness of the site lies in the diversity of its landscapes: the valley of the the Seine, cliffs chalky, wooded slopes and main forest of Chesnay.

The commune is adherent Regional natural park of French Vexin.

History

The name of the city comes from Latin Vetolium ; or perhaps of the anthroponyme Germanic Widilo and the Gallic ialo , clearing.

The village is occupied by the Normands preparing the invasion of Paris at the 9th century. The place is devoted seigniory of the the Rock-Guyon by the treaty of Saint-Clearly-on-Epte in 912. Two hospitals were founded there: initially the hospital of the Mathurins in 1214, then a Leper-house in 1228. At the beginning of the War One hundred Year old, the village is conquered by the English. The castle was taken again by Bertrand of Guesclin in 1364 and the village became again French, until the beginning of the reign of Charles VII in 1422 where it becomes again English for a score of years. In 1635, the village was reached by the Peste which made many victims.

The stay of Claude Monet at the 19th century gradually gave to the village a certain tourist reputation.

the village was the residence of the impressionist painter Claude Monet lived there and there worked of 1878 with 1881 and painted approximately 150 paintings there. Its model then wife, Camille Doncieux (1847 - 1879), dead on September 5th 1879 at the 32 years age, is buried with the cemetery of the village.
the novelist Victor Margueritte resided at it with his/her brother Paul at the castle of which they were owners.

Monuments and places of visit

the church of Vétheuil is of very old foundation; sarcophagi Mérovingiens were updated in 1906 in its nave. Its important dimension for a village reflects its vocation of church of pilgrimage. One reaches it thanks to a broad staircase of 50 5 m steps, which emerge vis-a-vis the southern gate. The chorus was built at the end of the 12th century, and the bell-tower raised at the 12th century. The Western gate is completed in 1540 and the southernmost gate was built in 1551.
