Vélingara
Vélingara is a town of Casamance (Senegal), located at 123 km of Kolda and at 311 km of Ziguinchor.
History
Administration
The commune is located in the Département of Vélingara in the area of Kolda.
Geography
The closest localities are Diourourou, Kadialin, Badimbour, Kampoto, Bounkiling, Kouadi Bainouk, Kandialon and Maniora Mandingue.
Geological physics
With a dozen kilometers in the south of Vélingara one can observe a crater of a diameter of 48 km, probalement due to an impact of meteorite.This phenomenon was known only in 1999. He was discovered thanks to the satellite images of NASA.
Population
The population is mainly made up of Peuhls and Mandingues.At the time of the censuses of 1988 and 2002, Vélingara respectively counted 14.068 and 20.806 inhabitants. In 2007, according to the official estimates, the population would be of 23.775 inhabitants.
Economy
It is a rural city which saw mainly trade of the local agricultural produce.
Culture
In 2007, Vélingara organized for the first time of the intercultural days, the International festival of Crossroads (FESICAR).
