Växjö (56°52' NR 14°48' E) is a Swedish city of the southernmost province of the Småland. It counts approximately 55.600 inhabitants (2005).

The town of Växjö is the seat of the Commune of Växjö and the principal, administrative, cultural center and industrialist of the Comté of Kronoberg.

It is the birthplace of the tennismen Jonas Bjorkman and Mats Wilander, of the pilot of Formule 1 Stefan Johansson, but also where the champion of heptathlon Carolina Klüft grew.

Carl von Linné carried out its studies there since the 9 years age until its twentieth year. The university of the city, accommodating 14000 students, is in addition particularly dynamic.

The group of Glam rock'n'roll Danger is originating in this city, and saw there.

A pilot city for sustainable development

The ecological action of Växjö started in the first years 1970, whereas the lakes of the surroundings were seriously polluted by local agriculture and industries. A great cleaning was undertaken and when the elected officials became aware of what could be made, Växjö took the route which did of it one of the greenest cities of Europe. Located in a landscape of forests and lakes in the south of Sweden, Växjö was given for objective to be freed completely from fossil energies. Thus in 2006, more half of consumption of energy of the city came from renewable sources.

The municipal purification plants produce Biogaz, the university is heated with the pellets and the swimming pool of the city is surmounted by Solar panels. The cycle tracks were developed at the expense of the roads, the inhabitants and the companies can obtain financial aids for the purchase of ecological cars and then station free.

In 1996, the municipality had been fixed for objective to reduce by 50 percent the carbon dioxide emissions per capita from here to 2010. At the beginning of 2007, the price " Durable energy for Europe" was decreed in Växjö by the European commission.

  • To convert 30 percent of arable lands into biological cultures

  • To reduce by 20 percent the consumption of Paper
  • To reduce by 20 percent per anybody the consumption of electricity
  • To increase by 20 percent circulation cyclist downtown
  • To increase by 20 percent the use of the Public transport
