The Channel Göta (Göta kanal) which connects Gothenburg to the the Baltic crosses the lake. It offers a maritime access to the lake ports of which most important are: Karlstad, Lidköping, Vänersborg, Kristinehamn, Åmål, Säffle and Mariestad.

The industry of the area of Vänern concentrates mainly in these ports. It specialized in particular in: the Tannery, the Metallurgy and the Paper mill.

The name

The form most employed in French with the 21e century is Vänern . One will then tend to name the lake under the term Vänern . What is redundant, indeed the termination Swedish E - N corresponds to the definite article “it”; Vänern would mean “Väner then”. It would be then preferable to use in French the form Väner .

In certain texts, often old, one finds the C-Ws communication Vener , Vèner or Venern , Vènern . They make it possible more accurately to transcribe the Swedish French pronunciation.

These orthographies are uncommon and can carry to confusion, one will thus take care to use the Swedish orthography Vänern .
