Uzwil

Uzwil is a common Suisse of the Canton of Saint-Gall, located in the District of Wil.

Geography

The commune is formed by the villages of Niederuzwil, Uzwil, Henau, Algetshausen, Niederstetten, Oberstetten and Stolzenberg.

With a population of 12  000 inhabitants, Uzwil is the common fifth of Canton of Saint-Gall. The village of Uzwil itself counts 5  000 inhabitants and that of Niederuzwil 6  000 inhabitants.

The point low of the commune is instead of junction of the Glatt and the the Thur, to 496 m of altitude. The culminating point is Vogelsberg, with 702  m of altitude.

History

Gill, the old name of Uzwil, has Celtic roots. Henau appears for the first time into 754 under the name of “Aninauva Villa”.

At the end of the XIXe century, the village developed with the construction of the railway line and the companies of the Benninger brothers and of Adolf Bühler.
