History

Uzein is one of the rare communes to be built in the middle of the old marshes of the Long Bridge. These covered marshy Moors of Touyas were used in pasturage of winter since unmemorable times by the shepherds of Winder and Ossau.

During centuries, they succeeded, either by lawsuits, or by the force, to maintain their privileges for finally obtaining government in 1837, documents of title on part of these moors.

The inhabitants of Uzein remained confined a long time on a restricted territory, Ossalois preventing them from extending their grounds of culture. They had only rights of pasturage on the moor which remained in free course. In 1101, Uzein was an appendix of Caubios and belonged to the bishops of Lescar. In 1385, Usenh (orthography until the end of the XVIIIe century) was composed of 15 hearths, the commune was to provide two soldiers to the Company of Morlaàs. The territory was already famous rich person by the breeding and the clearing of undergrowth who allowed to bring a good manure to the grounds.

In 1668, the seigniory belonged to Guillaume de Salinis, Seigneur of Doazon. It sold it on July 20th of the same year to Jerome Day, merchant with Pau.

The historians do not announce any striking fact until the end of the XIXe century. In some documents, the inhabitants of Uzein are designated under the nickname of “Grabassès d' Usenh”, of the word graba = mud, of course very present in these marshy zones.
