If its name means new city, it is well however one of the oldest cities of the country, exactly 10th the older. It was founded in 1617 by the king Gustave II Adolphe of Sweden. It however finds its place in the history only one century later. It is there indeed that is signed the Traité of Nystad which puts an end to the Great War North between the Sweden and the Russia, the August 30th 1721. This treaty sees Sweden yielding to imperial Russia Pierre de Grand the Estonia, the Ingrie, the Livonie and a good part of the Karelia, around the town of Vyborg. On the economic plan and policy, the proximity of the capital Turku prevents the city from becoming more than one small administrative and commercial center. The type-setter Bernhard Henrik Crusell is born to with it in 1775. The city counts only 1600 inhabitants in 1820 (8 times less than Turku, and 4 times less than the new capital Helsinki). It counts 3.000 of them before the large fire of the Années 1850 which will reduce it in ashes. It nevertheless is rebuilt out of wood, giving at its historical center a rare unit in Finland today.
Industrial takeoff is very late, posterior on arrival of the railway of Turku in 1924. At the end of the Years 1960, the city counts 5.000 inhabitants and knows his true takeoff with the launching of the automobile production in the factory Valmet Automotive, which starts to produce cars on behalf of the group Saab. If this production ended in 2003, the factory diversified and assembles cars Porsche (in particular the Boxter). It also produced for Lada, Talbot and Opel. The factory employs even more than 1.000 people today.
In same time, the city absorbed 4 rural communes, Uudenkaupungin maalaiskunta in 1969 (the farming community of Uusikaupunki), Pyhämaa in 1974, Lokalahti in 1981 and finally Kalanti in 1993.
