Utopia (Socialist party)
See also: Utopia
Utopia is the name of a current of the Socialist party (PS), Mouvement of the young Socialists (MJS) and Verts, in France. The purpose of it is animated by Franck Pupunat and is to define a new ideal of left. The name of this current was taken in reference to the book of Thomas More: Utopia . But the principal inspirations of the current come from the work of the sociologist Dominique Méda, of the philosophers André Gorz and Hannah Arendt as well as economist Jean Gadrey.
Motions in congress of the PS
With the congress of Dijon in 2003, the motion of Utopia, defended, inter alia, by Franck Pupunat and Michel Mazars, then spokesperson, collected more than 1100 votes (that is to say 1,05% of the votes cast) before carrying out the aforementioned “synthesis” with the national majority led by François Holland.To the congress of Mans in 2005, Utopia presents a new autonomous motion. It obtains 1,04% of the voices.
Motions in congress of the MJS
Utopia proposed with ERASME, the Gauche Socialist, and Justice Motion C “For a future on the left, let us give again the hope” which collected 12% of the votes to the Congress of Paris. Since the month of October 2007, young people utopiens formed Utopia Jeunes, a political group of which the ambition is to make share their ideal with the militants of the various youth movements from left (MJS, Jeunes Green, TO DREAM, etc).
Motions in congress of the Greens
Preferring to avoid internal division within the Green , Utopia gave up proposing a motion with the congress of Bordeaux of November 2006. Nevertheless, the current enters truly the party ecologist by proposing for the first time a national contribution within the framework of the preparatory debates.
The national convention of the project of the PS
At the national convention of the project of the Socialist party for the presidential and legislative elections of 2007, Utopia chose to bring four amendments which were not taken again by the final text. Franck Pupunat thus invited “the delegates present to abstain from here on the project”, while considering that “this text is that of all the Socialists” and that it is necessary “to make countryside on this basis”.
Legislative elections of 2007
Michele Baker-Armand is the only candidate with the legislative resulting from the rows of Utopia. With a score interns of 73,6%, it will carry the colors of the Socialist party on the district of Avignon.
Developed theories
Utopia was born from the denunciation of three alienations:- the dogma of the growth;
- the Consumer society and liberal notion of the merit;
- centrality of the value “work”.
It is important to stress that by denouncing the worship of the growth of the Gross domestic product (GDP), Utopia decides neither for the growth, nor for the decrease. It sagit for this current to redefine the richness through new indicators (social, environmental, cultural…).
With regard to the place of the value “work” in our lives, Utopia preaches the reduction of the legal duration at 32 hours on the “model of the 4 days week”.
Lastly, Utopiens decide in favor of a cover single and universal disease which will refund the whole of the care. They defend also the combat of the altermondialists (Lutte anti-GMO, tax of the type Tobin, Food sovereignty, etc) and of the feminists.
Utopia is currently requested by an author who coordinates the drafting of a collective work on “the report/ratio with the growth and with decrease” of which the date of publication envisaged at the end of 2006.
The cycle of conferences of Utopia
Since the month of October 2005, Utopia organizes a cycle of monthly conferences on varied political subjects bringing together intellectuals (economists, policies, civil society).
Partnership with the Utopia cinemas
Utopia organizes regularly with the chain of cinemas of the same name of the debates around committed films.
Supports of Utopia
Utopia was in particular supported by the essay writer Bernard Lallement, deceased on March 13rd, 2007. The sociologist Dominique Méda as for it is regarded as the “fellow traveller” of the current. The former Prime Minister Michel Rocard also expressed his curiosity for the current, while fustigating the “extreme-warping” currents of the PS.
Composition of association
Utopia association counts more than 1000 members in 2006, divided in 80 departments. 70% of them are militant with the Socialist party, 10% militants at the Verts and 20% come from the associative sector (like ATTAC).
