History

First inhabitants

Utö, then part of the commune of Jurmo. Previously, the island was known fishing and whalers since the 17th century to be a good natural port with bay of Fladan, directed in north, therefore contrary to the full sea, and facing in the island very close to Ormskär. The first two farms, Östergrannas and Södergrannas, are divided each one into two at the end of the Années 1770, giving rise to four fermes : Västergrannas, Norrgrannas, Östergrannas and Södergrannas

Russian period

The population increases then, especially for the Russian period of sovereignty on the Finland (1809 - 1917) where it reaches 129 inhabitants divided in 22 hearths. In 1884, the first school of the island is built in order to teach reading and writing the employees of the sea station of transport built in the Années 1840. The villagers work then in sea transport, the maintenance of the Phare and the office of Douane but of the protests occur in 1912 when the Russians try a Russianization of sea transport and headlight.

Utö becomes again suddenly uninhabited when after having been strengthened by the Russians, it is completely evacuated by the latter which repatriate the population on the continent during the First World War. During the conflict, Utö undergoes many changements : rebuildings of the houses, construction of a way of Railroad (destroyed in the Years 1960) to transport the Ammunition S, construction of a pier in bay of Fladan. The island is attacked only once, in 1915 when the German approach the island, making three wounded. Between these army grounds the village is placed which counts some houses, the pier of the port, the school, the sea station of transport, the Chapelle (built in 1910), the Musée (older building of Utö built in 1753), the Phare (rebuilt in 1814 and electrified in 1935.
