Usual first name
The usual first name is that which one uses and by which one is made call.
In France article 57 of the Civil code French (law n° 93-22 of the January 8th 1993) lays out that:
Any first name registered in the Birth certificate can be selected like usual first name.
In addition the Jurisprudence of the Court of appeal (First Civil court, stop of the April 4th 1991) states that nothing is opposed so that is used, as a usual first name, any of the first names being reproduced on the registers of the civil statue and that such a use is essential on the thirds as with the public authorities .
The usual first name can be mentioned on the National card of identity on request. It is then presented in the following way (fictitious example of Mrs. Isabelle Durand ):
Name: DUPONT
Épouse: DURAND
Prénom (S): ANNE, HENRIETTE, ISABELLE, THERESE
usual Prénom: ISABELLE
It should be known that at the XIXe century and the beginning of XXe, it was very frequent, in certain areas, however without it being a rule, that the people having three first names in their birth certificate, are made call by the last of these. One finds trace of this use in the Lists of names of the population (Recensement) which, for a long time, listed only the usual first name. One also finds it in some island S of the Indian Ocean or one takes the last first name.
