Ustou
Ustou is a common French, located in the department of the Ariège and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.
Its inhabitants is called Ustouens.
Geography
Commune located in the the Pyrenees in Couserans on the Alet.
Ustou is located in Ariège in Haut-Couserans and the canton of Oust between the valleys of Garbet (Aulus-the-Baths) and of Haut-Salat (Salau). The road which crosses the valley leaves the Bridge-of-the-Clink to the collar of Latrape which makes it possible to join Aulus-the-Baths. It is crossed by the river Alet which is thrown in the Salat on the level of the Bridge-of-the-Clink.
The commune of Ustou which is spread out all along the valley is made up of some villages (Saint-Lizier, Trein and Sérac) each one having their church and cemetery, as well as multiple hamlets (Escots, Bieille…). It should be noted that the Hameau of Rouzes which dominates Couflens and the valley of Haut-Salat depends on the commune of Ustou.
The Ski station of Guzet-snow which is the only station of Couserans is on the ground of the commune.
The valley is frontier with the Spain. One can go to Spain by the Ports of Marterat (2217m) and Couillac (2416m). For a few years has been held transborder Ustou - Tavascan during which a race passing by the Port of Marterat makes it possible to join Saint-Lizier of Ustou with Tavascan in Spain.
The valley ends in the circus of Cagateille, second circus of the Pyrenees after Gavarnie.

The valley of Ustou was especially known at the 19th century for its showmen of Ours.

Very populated at the XIXe century the valley was gradually emptied of its inhabitants to the XXe century especially because of the Industrialization and the First World War.
