Urt

Urt is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine. It is located at the edge of the Adour at 15 km of Bayonne.

The inhabitants are Urtois and Urtoises.

Located in the province of the Labourd, Urt currently forms part of the Basque Country. It however belonged to the Gascogne, and the Gascon was still used there there is little.

Its Basque name is Ahurti .

The commune is crossed by the Adour, and its affluent, the Joyeuse and by the tributaries of this one, the Marmareko Erreka, the brook of Lartasso and Eyhéracharko erreka.

Toponymy

The toponym Urt appears in the forms Aurt (1193, cartulaire of Bayonne), Hurt (1243, titles of Camara de Comptos), Aourt (XIIIe century, collection Duchesne volume CXIV), Beata Maria d' Urt (1686, collations of the diocese of Bayonne) and Freedom (1793).

History

Paul Raymond note which the seigniory of Urt belonged to the duchy of Gramont.

The existence of sites going back to paleolithic and the certificate later of a brotherhood of fishermen (abbey of Sordes in the year 1040) testify to the strategic importance of this place.

Religious heritage

  • the vault of the Immaculate-Design, which shelters a high altar and a whole of seven canopies.
  • the church of the Assumption-of-the-Happy-Virgin-Marie who contains an ex-voto (model of boat) and a table of Rene-Marie Castaing representing holy Benoît.

The commune shelters two religious communities bénédictines:

  • the Monastery Holy-Scholastique (bénédictines) including a church which conceals a decorated chorus, a gate vault in mosaic, a high altar and a whole of two furnace bridges.
  • the Abbey Notre-Dame de Belloc (Benedictines).

Environmental inheritance

A race of bovines, the blonde of Urt (animals with russet-red hair, of intermediate size and strongly constructed), adapted very well to work of cartages and ploughings in rough ground, still existed at the beginning of the XXe century, constituting with the Béarnaise and the Lourdaise the blonde of the Pyrenees, located in mountain in the south of the Aquitanian basin, and specialized in the production of Lait for making of cheeses.
