Its interest for the literature is declared very early since to 11 years it subjects already a first history (refused) to the magazine Astounding Science Fiction. Its studies proceed with the Harvard University' S Radcliffe College , with the Université Columbia in New York then in France where it meets her husband, Charles Guin, of Breton origin (LeGuin, of Guen, of gwenn, white). It presents in 1952 a thesis on the ideas of died in the poetry of Ronsard . The author becomes famous starting from the publication in 1969 of his novel the Left hand of the night which receives the prices Hugo and Nebula.

Work

The majority of its science-fictitious writings are characterized by the importance which they attach to social sciences like the Sociologie or the Anthropologie. Its works often deliver a message on ourself via the invention of unusual extraterrestrial cultures. A typical example is the study of the sexual identity in the Left hand of the night . In addition, the auteure is known for its capacity to create credible and populated worlds very human characters. Thus, its works in the field of the Fantasy (the cycle of Terremer) are centered much on the human condition than those of other authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, even if they share the idea, specific to many accounts belonging to this kind, of a “true king” who must save the world and restore justice.

In 2002, the Prix Nebula decrees to him the title of large Master of the Science-fiction.
