History
One does not know in an unquestionable way the origin of our village but it is however established that into 250 before J. - C, a sparsity of the population of Celts populated the bottom of the valley of the Beetle. The way, the length whose Urmatt was established later, would be an old Celtic way dating from the time when a Germanic tribe of origin populated banks of the Rhine towards 70 before J. - C, pushing back the Celts towards the interior of the grounds. The menhirs set up on Langenberg consolidate this thesis. The German ones, remained after the victory of the Roman war leader Julius over the Germain Ariovist in the plain of Alsace, pushed back more and more the Celts towards the mountains. The valley of the Beetle remained nevertheless under the Celtic influence whereas in the plain of the Rhine the Germanic influence was made more and more feel. By the tender of all Gaulle, Alsace also passed under the Roman domination, but the Romans did not oblige the inhabitants to change their practices and left at time the care to make the things. During the 2nd century after J. - C, Alsace is again invaded, but by of Allamands crossing the Rhine.Florent saint, come for évangéliser the area, had a great influence on it towards 660. Doctor Guri, former mayor of the commune, left us a manuscript in which he writes: “it seems that Urmatt is named for the first time in the history into 810, at the time of Charlemagne”. The Alsatian historian Grandidier goes up for the name Urmatt with the Latin source " URUS". It was according to him the ideal place to drive out the aurochs in trenches on a marshy ground. According to Schoepflin, another historian, UR-MAT would come from UR=vieux, and MAT=prés, i.e. " old man prés". Urmatt belonged to the chapter (assembled held by canons or monk) of Haslach, and of this fact had of the days of drudgery, the dîme, etc the parish only became independent in 1802. It would seem that with the whole beginning of the installation of our village on the site of Urmatt, a vault was built at the place where the road is in front of the old cemetery. The well of the village had been with the site of the carpark in front of the cemetery, it was filled at the 19th century at the time of the layout of the conduit of drinking water. No proof, setting with share the collective memory, can be brought to the existence of this vault and this well. In 1444, the church of Lutzelhouse is burnt. That of Urmatt probably underwent the same fate but it is not made by it state. Then the war 30 years, a terrible war for the valley of the Beetle came. Thus several villages disappeared from the valley, of which " Walterspach" located on the round of applause of Urmatt, in the forest, with the foot of Katzenberg.
During the Revolution, very animated in our village which counted 290 inhabitants, two clans of family clashed violently, the first was that of the family Ignace Schuller, revolutionist, and the second clan that of the families Schneider, Siat, Valentine, Stern, anti revolutionists and defenders of the Church. Under the Second Empire, young people having " tiré" the bad number left to the military service for 7 long years. Several of these young people died in the service of the Emperor guerroyant in many regions. At the time of the Crimean War, seven young people originating in our locality died in the combat during the only year 1855. In 1999 at the time of the last census, Urmatt counted approximately 1350 inhabitants. Today, the population can be estimated at 1500 people.
