Urbi and orbi

Urbi and orbi are an expression Latin E which wants to say “for the city (of Rome) and for the world”.

Urbi, dative of urbs “city, the city (Rome)”, and “and”, orbi, dative of orbis “circle, circular surface, ground, universe”.

In the Catholic liturgy , in fact the words accompany the solemn blessings by the Pape to all Christendom (the top of the Balcon of the Basilique Saint-Pierre, in the town of Rome) the days of Easter, of Christmas and on rare exceptional occasions.

This blessing is reserved to the Pope, as a bishop of Rome (Urbi) and universal Pasteur of the Church (orbi). It is matched granting of a plenary Indulgence as well for the faithful present physically (Urbi) as receiving the blessing by the means of the radio and television (orbi).

Sancti Apostoli Petrus and Paulus, of quorum potestate and auctoritate confidimus, ipsi interceding pro nobis AD Dominum.

R. Amen.

Precibus and meritis beatæ Mariæ semper Virginis, beati Michaelis Archangeli, beati Ioannis Baptistæ and sanctorum Apostolorum $petri and Pauli and omnium Sanctorum misereatur vestri omnipotens Deus and dimissis peccatis bus peccatis vestris, perducat your Iesus Christus AD vitam æternam.

R. Amen.

Indulgentiam, absolutionem and remissionem omnium peccatorum vestrorum, spatium verae and fructuosae pænitentiæ, horn semper pænitens and emendationem vitæ, gratiam and consultationem sancti Spiritus and finalem perseverantiam in profits operibus, tribuat vobis omnipotens and misericors Dominus.
