Urban community of Lyon

The Large Lyon , Urban community of Lyon (in the past COURLY ), is a French Urban community , structure inter-commune gathering 57 communes of the agglomeration of Lyon located in the department of the the Rhone. In 1999,32% of the population of Large Lyon even lived in Lyon.

She was initiated in 1966 by the annexation with the department of the the Rhone of certain communes of the departments of the Ain and the Isere, and was created on January 1st, 1969. For this time, the law has changed and nothing any more forces a Urban community to be included within the limits of only one department.

Its president is traditionally the mayor of Lyon. Under the mandates of the UDF Raymond Barre (1995 - 2001) and especially of the socialist Gerard Collomb (since 2001), the executive also comprises vice-presidents resulting from the other political edge, in the objective stated to stabilize the majority.

Large Lyon includes the majority of the communes of the Lyons agglomeration. It should be noted however that the communes further away from the center formed their own inter-commune structure, like:

the the Community of communes of the Valley of Garon: 27.515 inhabitants

Communes

Widening

In November 2005, the communes of Givors and Grigny subjected their candidature for adhesion to Large Lyon, after consultation of the population. The Community Council voted its agreement with these candidatures.

The official entry took place on January 1st 2007. It is about the first extension of Large Lyon since 1969. The two communes profit from the advantages of the agglomeration (fastening to the trade union of transport TCL, roadway system, household refuse…) while Large Lyon increases of a score of km ².

Anecdote

During its creation, this urban community had taken as acronym BOTTOM (Urban community of Lyon), vis-a-vis the outcry which this name caused, the acronym COURLY ( CO mmunauté UR baine of LY one) was quickly substituted. Since 1990, and the election of Michel Noir to the presidency, this acronym was officially abandoned with the profit of LARGE LYON , even if “COURLY” continues to trail in many spirits.
