Urban community of Cherbourg

The Urban community of Cherbourg (CUC) is a French inter-commune structure , located in the department of the Manche and the area Basse-Normandie.

History

As of the years 1920, the mayor of Equeurdreville, Hippolyte Mars, launched the idea of the creation of a " Large Cherbourg".

In 1941, is created an intercommunity association for the construction and the management of the slaughter-house. Twenty years later, it is the management of the cleansing which brings the creation of a mixed trade-union between Cherbourg, Octeville and the Mirror factory. In 1965, the communes of Équeurdreville and Hainneville amalgamate.

In 1971, the Urban community of Cherbourg is founded. It gathers 6 communes: Cherbourg, Octeville, Tourlaville, Equeurdreville-Hainneville, Querqueville and the Mirror factory.

The November 7th 1999, political will of fusion of the 6 communes in a " Large Cherbourg" involve the behavior of a Référendum of local initiative. But with the " question; Summers you favorable to the fusion of your commune with others to carry out Large Cherbourg? " , only the majorities of the voters of Cherbourg (83,72% of yes) and of Octeville (55,88%) answered positively, involving the maintenance of the urban community, and the fusion of Cherbourg-Octeville on March 1st 2000.

The headlight project of the intercommunality cherbourgeoise and its president, was the opening in 2003 City of the Sea, in the old transtlantic harbor station.

The Urban community is adherent with the Mixed trade-union of Cotentin since June 2001.

Competences

The CUC has load of competence on behalf of the 5 communes:
  • the urban transport
  • town planning and housing
  • the roadway system
  • the environment (household refuse, cleansing, water, and cleaning)
