Uranien is a term of the end of the XIXe century indicating those which one currently names people LGBT.
It is thought that it is the English adaptation of the German word Urning, which was published the first time by the activist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs in 1864 and 1865 in a series of five booklets which were gathered under the title of Forschungen über das Räthsel DER mannmännlichen Liebe (“the enigma of the Man-Virile love”). Ulrich developed his terminology before the first public use of the homosexual term “”, which appeared in 1869 in a booklet published under cover of anonymity by Karl-Maria Kertbeny.
