Ur-Nammu
Ur-Nammu , king of Ur of -2112 with -2094. Governor of Ur and officer of the king of Uruk Utu-hegal, it supplants this last, which dies drowned accidentally, and founds the Third Dynasty of Ur (2112 - 2004 av. J. - C.), ultimate rebirth of the civilization sumérienne.
After having vassalized Lagash (- 2111), Ur-Nammu, is made crown with Nippur “king d' Ur, king de Sumer and of Akkad” and restores the order and prosperity on Sumer (- 2108). Its authority is firmly established on the country sumérien, from which all the inscriptions come, but it is not certain that it exceeded Nippur towards north.
Ur-Nammu, concerned of justice, promulgates oldest known code of laws: the monetary standard (money mine and sicle), the weights and measures ( silà ) are standardized. The widow and the orphan, the poor are protected. The wives are it also against their pure and simple reference. The rape of the slave of another man, the false witness, slandering, the aggravated assault are the subject of a money-metal compensation.
Under its reign, Sumer knows one period of commercial expansion towards the Persian Gulf.
Ur-Nammu restores the walls of the cities each time it is necessary and devotes its energy to the repairing of the network of the channels without which no economic development is possible. Rebuilding works in which it engages do not explain why if they are pressed on a solid economy. It develops agriculture, drains marshes to plant date palms there and returns in Ur its richness of large commercial port.
Ur-Nammu makes build in Ur a religious district dominated by large a Ziggourat out of cooked brick, dedicated to the god-moon Nanna (Sîn in Akkadien). Similar constructions are born with Nippur, Uruk, Larsa, Eridu, Assur. They are turns on floors (in general three, sometimes more) which succeed the high terraces of the beginning of.
