Upsilon

Upsilon (capital Υ , tiny υ ), in Greek ὒ ψιλόν , of the Greek alphabet is the twentieth letter. In Greek numeration it has a value of 400.

In Greek old, this letter in the beginning decided probably /ou/ as in red (in accordance with the Indo-European heritage), then was closed in /u/ as in ballot box .
Aujourd'hui, in Greek modern, it is marked /i/. As a former Greek, the letter could be long or short, distinction now lost.

If it were at the beginning of word, the letter upsilon was preceded by a aspiration (which one notes thanks to the hard Esprit: ὑ ), with the result that the Greek words with initial upsilon gave in French words starting with hy- (Hypnose, Hystérique…).

Upsilon is also often present in the Diphtongue S: for example after Alpha or Epsilon he is pronounced in modern Greek /f/ or /v/ (either af , front , EFF and ev ).

The Roman Empereur Claude proposed to introduce a new letter into the Latin alphabet to imitate its Greek of upsilon. In the beginning this letter decided just. One changed his name into “U psilon” (Greek ὒ ψιλόν , “U simple”) to separate it from οι , which had the same pronunciation.

It gave in the Latin alphabet four letters: U, V, W, and Y incorrectly called “I Greek” in French.
