Upādāna
Upādāna (Sanskrit, Faded; Japanese: Shu), means attachment .
According to the conditioned Coproduction, the attachment is conditioned by thirst, or desire, Tṛṣna, and conditions in its turn it to become, Bhava.
The consitutants of a person are named upādāna- Skandha S, “aggregates of attachment”.
Analyzes
According to Buddhaghosa, upādāna is simply an intensification of tṛṣna. But the analysis of these two links of the interdependence seems to distinguish them.
Four attachments are distinguished by the Dhammasangani:
- sensual Attachment, kāmaupādāna
- Attachment with the erroneous designs, ditthiupādāna
- Attachment with ritual, silabbataupādāna
- belief in the personality, attavadaupādāna
The sensual attachment seems to cover the concept of sensory thirst, kāma Tṛṣna; the three other attachment correspond as for them to three of the Ten bonds, samyojana.
