Unterach amndt Attersee

Unterach , in High-Austria, is a village in the Salzkammergut the area of the lakes.

Geography:

The small village of Unterach is with the southern point of the lake Attersee to 493 m of altitude in the center of Salzkammergut. The commune extends on 10 km between the two lakes “Mondsee” and “Attersee” and is at the border of the autonomous region of Salzburg. Unterach has a climate good astonishment for Salzkammergut.

The commune gathers the following localities: Ort amndt Mondsee, See amndt Mondsee, With, Mühlleitenh, Misling, Stockwinkel.

History:

At the previous century, one called Unterach “Small Venice” because of his geographical location between two lakes. The name even of “Untraha” wants to say “Zwischenwasser”. One mentioned this name the first time at the time of the foundation of the cloister of Mondsee into 748. In 990, one built the first church and until the XIX century, one could only arrive at Unterach by the lake. In 1872, Matthäus Much discovered constructions lake of the neolithic age in See amndt Mondsee (a loquacity of Unterach), they are the colonies best documented at the edge of the lake Mondsee and Attersee.

The old Gothic construction of this church must be built at the 15th century. The church has its current form since 1783.

It is in the only forest of chestnuts of the north of the Alps that the “Jubiläumsbaum is”, a tree planted for the 60ème birthday of the rise on the throne of the emperor François Joseph I.

  • the peat bog of “Egelsee”

The lake which was worked out for the last glacial period, is surrounded by a very invaluable flora (several kinds of orchises etc).

  • the mausoleum of Victor Kaplan

The mausoleum of the inventor of the Kaplan turbine is in full drill.

  • Seefest (festival of the village; 2nd Saturday of August)

  • Village fair (last Sunday in August)

  • the festival of the sweet chestnut (Austrian national festival)

The commune counted 1.491 in 2001.

Characters celebrated:

The picturesque commune was and is the fatherland of adoption of much of personalities famous for example Victor Kaplan, which rests in Unterach.

Moreover, Unterach is a holiday resort for celebrities such as Hugo Wolf, Johannes Brahms, Gottfried Keller, Georg Danzer, Gerhard Andlinger, Carl Zuckmayer, Friedrich Gulda or Thomas Bernhard.
