Unquestionable François of Canrobert
François Marcellin Certain of Canrobert (July 27th 1809 - January 28th 1895) is a French marshal.
Born with Saint-Céré in the Batch, where its native house remains and where a monument with its effigy is drawn up place of the Republic. Military cadet, he became officer of infantry and was useful in Algérie, of 1835 to 1839. Recalled in France by the prince-president Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, it was promoted brigadier general and contributed to the success of the coup d'etat of December 2nd 1851 by repressing hard the attempt at rising of the republicans. Major general, it took part then in the Crimean War and assumed the command as a chief in the place of the marshal Armand Jacques Leroy of Saint-Arnaud. He gained the victory of Inkermann. Its disagreements with Lord Raglan, general British, obliged it to cancel its command.
Promoted Marshal of France in 1856, it was distinguished with the Bataille from Magenta (June 4th, 1859) and contributed largely to the victory of Solférino (June 24th, 1859). At the beginning of the war of 1870, he hustled in Saint-Privat the three bodies of the Steinmetz general, but he was made prisoner with the marshal François Achille Bazaine at the time of rendering of Metz. Elected official senator under the IIIe Republic, it was one of the chiefs of the party Bonapartist.
From 1872 to 1956, the Village of the Angel-Guard, in the county of Rouville, to Quebec bore the name of Canrobert in the honor of the Marshal. Moreover, a row of the municipality always commemorates the battle of Magenta, where it had been illustrated.
