University of the geometricians and topographers
Education > Higher learning > Schools of engineers ----
The University of the Geometricians and Topographers ( ESGT ) is a school of engineers which depends directly on the Conservatoire National of Arts and Métiers (CNAM).
Created initially to ensure the initial training of the futures Geometrician-Experts, the school gradually turned to a vaster public formed by all the professions which of near or by far have certainly to see with the Topographie, but also with the Cartographie, the Urbanisme, the Town and country planning, the Civil engineering, the field Foncier, etc
The ESGT has its own research laboratory labelized by the Ministère of Higher education and Research: The Laboratory of Geodesy and Géomatique (L2G)
the school is located on the university campus of the Mans (72), 1 boulevard Pythagore.
Origin and evolutions
1947: Creation of the School then located in the buildings of the CNAM at Paris. In 1978, removal with Evry (91). In 1997, delocalization in Mans in the University campus, decided in CIADT in 1995.
Until 1993, the School trained on average 35 engineers per annum, during a three years schooling. Following a very thorough study of needs, a complete refitting of the formations of Geometrician-Topographer organized by the CNAM was studied, which resulted in particular diversifying the recruitment of the ESGT in direction of the scientific preparatory classes and in increasing the manpower of the pupils considerably, to reach approximately 80 students by promotion.
September 1997: first re-entry in the buildings of Mans.
2007: Certification of the Laboratory of Geodesy and Géomatique (L2G) as a Young Team of the Ministry for Higher education and Research.
Formations
Lesson
The formation is multi-field and comprises five great sectors: matters of general culture (Mathematical, Physical, Data-processing French and English), matters with dominant " juridique" (Land, expertise), with dominant " économique" , with dominant " Town and country planning " and with dominant " topographic techniques and Géomatique ". These various matters form a coherent whole which allow engineer ESGT to be extremely general-purpose, so much as geometrician - specialist in land and topographic measurement - who in the research departments and of installation.
The first year is devoted to the basic lesson, it makes it possible in particular to homogenize the level of the pupils coming from the various initial selections.
The second year is devoted to the theoretical and practical lesson relating to the techniques of the Topographie, being studied of the land right, the matters related on the economy and the study of the Environnement.
One six-month period of the third year is reserved for deepenings:
The die Géomatique reinforces competences of the students in Topographie, Métrologie and Photogrammétrie but also in the Geographical Information systems (SIG).
The Foncière die brings a deepening in the fields of the Town and country planning, the estimate and the land expertise.
From February to June the students complete a research task in company which is concluded by a defense in front of a jury. This work of end of studies represents an important personal work which must be innovating and relatively original.
Complementary training courses in company are carried out at the end of the first and second year, one 2 months duration. They allow a useful supplement of formation in the professional matters, and a familiarisation with the work context.
At the conclusion satisfactory from these three year of studies, it will be decreed a diploma for the occupation of Engineer Géomètres Topographers. Since the Réforme LMD a mastaire is delivered in the name of the State at the same time as the title of qualified engineer.
A characteristic of the ESGT is due to the fact that the majority of technical educations are ensured by free-lance, professional teachers high level exerting within great administrations, or of public services, or in public or deprived large companies and not by permanent professors. Each teacher can thus constantly associate in his course the theoretical basic training related to the developments in the most elaborate technologies with the concrete problems posed by the practices. This organization thus guarantees an alive and up to date teaching at one time when the techniques evolve/move quickly.
The ESGT and continuing education
The School proposes several cycles of specialization in the land and photogrammetric fields in collaboration with other schools of engineers (ENSG, INSA Strasbourg, ESTP).
It also can according to the requests to set up specific trainings in the fields taught in its cycle of engineers geometricians topographers.
Outlets
The ESGT is currently the dominating French formation leading to the trades of the Topographie, of the Géomatique, the fields land and real, the Town and country planning. All the graduates find an employment as of their exit of the School. The outlets offered to the young engineers multiple and are varied.
An appreciable outlet is obviously the trade of Land Geometrician-Expert (60% of the former students). The qualified engineer of the ESGT, after some complementary professional training courses, can be registered with the Ordre of the Geometrician-Experts. He will then become the specialist in the land and buildings and topographic measurement. It is about a liberal profession rather little known, but which makes it possible to reach, for the interested and dynamic engineer, with remunerations high and justifying, with a great practical independence and very important responsibilities sometimes.
Engineer ESGT could also be an actor active and appreciated professional sectors of the Environnement, installation and Urbanisme. He will be able to engage with the service of the territorial local government agencies or but also of the public administrations (DDE, DDA, DIREN…) or state enterprises (Électricité de France, the SNCF, the RATP…) who are in particular in the search of specialists in Geographical Information systems (SIG). It will be able to finally work within a company of public works, of Civil engineering, a research department of Informatique, Photogrammétrie, Cartographie…
Recruitment
Pupils - engineers are recruited in three different dies:
- holders of a BTS Geometrician-Topographer (by contest and maintenance)
- pupils leaving Maths Spé Sup-Maths (by contest and maintenance)
- pupils leaving the second year license E2i ESGT the University Maine (by file examination and maintenance)
