History

During the Antiquity, Marseilles has a university which declines with the fall of the Roman Empire.

In 1409, Louis II of Provence creates a university with Aix-en-Provence. As everywhere in France, this one is dissolved in 1791: the faculties dispersed on the two cities are autonomous. The April 21st 1881 the Medical school of Marseilles is established in the Palais of Pharo by decision of the municipal council.

The Loi Faure of 1968 gathers faculties within new universities: in 1969 two universities are established in Aix-Marseilles, then a third in 1973.

In 1994 the university Aix-Marseilles II takes the name of Université of the Mediterranean .
