University of technology

A university of technology (UT) is a public corporation in scientific, cultural and professional matter (EPSCP), an establishment of higher education and research, whose particular missions are fixed by the article L. 711-3 of the code of education.

It will be created, under the conditions envisaged in article 21 of the law n° 84-52 of January 26th, 1984 on higher education, of the public corporations in scientific, cultural and professional matter, named " universities of technologie" ; having for main mission the training of the engineers, the development of research and technology. These establishments will be either of the institutes and schools external to the universities concerned with section II of the chapter 1st of title III of this law, or of great establishments concerned with section III of the chapter 1st of title III of the aforesaid the loi.
Establishments of higher education can be transformed into universities of technology, provided that the annual flow of entries in their technological dies is at least equal to five hundred étudiants.

Historically, the first university of French technology was founded in 1972 with Compiegne by Guy Deniélou (UTC). This one then essaimé in Belfort in 1985 (Antenna of the university of technology of Compiegne then IPSé, polytechnic Institut of Sévenans, then UTBM, Universtité of technology of Belfort - Montbeliard in 1999 after fusion with ENIBe, National school of engineers de Belfort founded in 1962) then with Troyes in 1994 (UTT).

Inspired by the American university of PEN to Philadelphia, these three universities are a French mixture between the universities of this country and its schools of engineers. They are indeed organized like the universities, temples of knowledge being based on the triptych teaching-research-valorization (transmission of knowledge, the creation of knowledge and the transfer of knowledge in economic fabric), their teaching model is with the crossing of the North-American model and the French traditions: choice of the matters, separation of the courses, work directed and practical works. These three establishments give thus a training of engineer equivalent to the Bac+5 formations of the traditional schools.

This network recently founded a fourth university of technology, UTSEUS with Shanghai.

In 2004, the Dauphine University of Paris IX adopted the denomination d'" University of technology in sciences of the organizations and the decision of Paris-Dauphine" (). This establishment therefore did not become a university of technology within the meaning of the article L. 711-3 of the code of education since its institutif decree does not confer such missions to him.

Formation

The training of engineer lavished by the universities of technology is divided into two parts:
  • the Joint Base (TC) which corresponds to a preparatory cycle of school of engineer. One can enter there directly after the baccalaureat, or a foreign equivalent. At the end of this cycle, one obtains a diploma of level bac+2 named Deutec (Diploma of academic works of technology).
  • the branches which correspond to the cycle of engineer. One reaches it either after having finished the formation of Joint Base, or after having obtained a diploma of level bac+2.

The formation is organized not per years or quarters, but per six-month periods. The Joint Base thus lasts usually 4 six-month periods and the branch 6 six-month periods. It should be noted the important communication with the companies via two 6 months training courses during the formation in branch. The first, called “Training course” taking place during the third six-month period, and the second, called “Project” taking place during the sixth six-month period.
