The Data-processing University of and applications of Lorraine ( ESIAL ) is a school of engineer S public created into 1990 within the Université Henri Poincaré Nancy 1.

It trains engineers with competence in the fields of data processing. The title of engineer ESIAL is validated by the Commission of the Titles of Engineer.

Teaching

The formation lasts three years, after a BAC+2. During this one, the pupils choose fields which they wish to look further into:

• IT - Software Engineering
• SIE - Information systems of Company
• TRS - Telecommunications, Networks and Systems/Services
• ALSI - Software Applications for the Industrial Systems (nonopen in 2006/2007)
• the - Software Embarked

This lesson has each one their specificity and brings a personal enrichment to the future engineer. At the end of each year, the pupils carry out a training course to implement their knowledge and to be integrated into the world of the company. The majority of the teachers of ESIAL are researchers in three laboratories inter-academics:

• LORIA (Lorraine Laboratory of research in data processing and its applications), associated with Lorraine INRIA (National research institute in data processing and automatically) since 1986.
• the NOTCH (Research center automatically of Nancy), associated with CNRS (National center of the scientific research) since more than ten years.
• IECN (Institute Elie Cartan of Nancy) associated with CNRS and Lorraine INRIA

Third year in double course

In parallel of the 3rd year, the pupils interested by the scientific research have the possibility of being registered in Master Recherche in Data processing, automated Production or CSC (Control, Signaux and Communication). This double inscription will make it possible to continue in thesis, thus opening a career in research and higher education. These engineer-doctors, very rare on the job market, can either join the private sector with a considerable valorization of their formation, or to postulate for posts of teacher-researchers of higher education or researchers CNRS or INRIA in particular. These pupils can profit from research grants, granting an financial autonomy to them.

The main axes of data-processing research in master to LORIA are:

• Image, modeling and simulation
• Development assisted of software and databases

In computer-integrated manufacturing, one finds 5 research orientations to the NOTCH:

• of the continuous processes
• Engineering for health

It is also possible to carry out one abroad 3rd year in one of the many universities having a partnership with the ESIAL, like making a Master Professionnel.

Intermediate duration of research of the first employment:

Less than 2 months.

Remuneration

Annual salary gross average for the 1st employment all confused promotions: 29.000 Euros.

As example, the 1st wages of the graduates of 2004 vary between 20.000 and 41.000 euros.

Evolution of the wages

• after 3 years: + 20%

• after 5 years: + 50%

• after 10 years: + 100%

The average wages of the first promotion (1993) are 55.000 €/an. The average wages all confused promotions are of 43.000 €/an. The highest wages can reach 150.000 €/an.

The ESIAL places at the disposal of the students, within AIPL (Workshop Inter-establishment of Computer-integrated manufacturing of Lorraine), of the equipment and the software covering all the fields of the computer-integrated manufacturing.

Admissions

One reaches the formation after the preparatory classes (Concours Telecom INT), DEUG, the HAD and BTS.

An admission in 2nd year is possible after a Control of data processing (NB: old system, before LMD) .
