The Université of South Africa (in English University off South Africa , shortened in UNISA) is an important South-African university , based initially with the Cape then with Pretoria.

Founded in 1873 like the first South-African university under the name of University off the Cape off Good Hope (University of the Cape of Good Hope), with like Latin currency spes in arduis . The young person Fernando A.N. Pessôa, then installed with Durban in his father-in-law consul of the Portugal, obtained there Queen Victoria Memorial Prize in 1903 then in 1904 Intermediate Examination in Arts (the access to the university): he left shortly after the Natal for Portugal and did not continue its academic works.

Created by the law n° 16 of 1873 of the Parliament of the Cape, the university was built on the model of that of London. The Victoria queen recognized her statutes in 1877 by guaranteeing the recognition of her diplomas through Great Britain and her colonies. Renamed University off South Africa in 1916, it settled in Pretoria.
