Founded in 1979, the Université of Savoy accommodates today more than 12.000 students. Wishing to avoid making a choice between the two local big cities, Chambéry and Annecy, the authorities preferred to choose a practical solution by setting up a bicephalous university distributed between the departments of Savoy, social sciences and legal, and of Haute-Savoie, technology sector. A third pole, scientist, were born on the Technopôle Savoy Technolac.

Its alpine localization and the proximity of the lakes or ski stations makes of it a university appraisal at the time of the international exchanges Erasmus (classification in the 10 first).

History

Capital of the County then Duchy of Savoy, of 1295 to 1563, with the apogee of the States of Savoy (of the Bresse to the Country of Vaud, of Nice to the Piedmont), Chambéry will not accommodate any university contrary to the new capital Turin which obtains a university dice 1405 (Université of Turin). All at best, obtains it the framework of a " school préparatoire" preparing the Savoyard students before the departure for Turin.

The Annexation, in 1860, sees the creation of an academy of Chambéry (removed in 1920), but not of university. Only prospect for higher learning, a decree of February 18th, 1861 establishes a preparatory School with the higher education of Sciences and Letters as well as a practical School of sciences.

It is necessary to await the movement of creation of the universities in the years 1960 so that the Savoy obtains a University Scientific Collège (CSU), then a University Literary Collège (CLU) in 1963. The fusion of these two colleges forms, on May 9th 1969, the University center of Savoy (CUS), with Chambéry. In 1973, Annecy receives a Technological Academic institute (IUT) comprising a department Techniques and Marketing and a department Business management and administrations .

June 27th, 1979, by decree, the CUS becomes officially university .

More than one bicephalous university, the new university is divided between four localizations. The town of Chambéry accommodates the presidency and the administration. The commune bordering on Jacob-Bellecombette was seen allotting the university field of social sciences and legal, of tourism… The old military base located on the Le Bourget-of-Lake (with 12km of Chambéry) was refitted in technopolis, Savoy Technolac, and received the scientific and technical pole of the university, just as an Institute specialized on the mountain field, a School of Engineers (Polytech' Savoy higher ex-School engineers of Chambéry-ESIGEC) and a ESC. Lastly, the town of Annecy and especially the grounds of Annecy-the-Old man accommodate a IUT and a IUP specialized in the technique and the commercial one. Moreover, the site of Annecy-the-Old man accommodates an training institute by alternation (T.E.T.R.A.S.) and a School of Engineers (Polytech' Savoy ex-School Superior of Engineer of Annecy-ESIA).

But 1973, the CUS tries to widen its disciplinary offer while trying to exceed the traditional disciplines and to propose lesson closer to the local concerns (M.S.T of genius of the environment related to the strong orientation of Savoy towards the building and civil engineering, a department of Foreign languages applied and management from the point of view of the Savoyard tourist development, the development of the IUT of Annecy in connection with SME specialized in undercutting in the valley of Arve).

The choice of the name of " the University of Savoy " allows not to choose and not to oppose the towns of Chambéry and Annecy.
