History
At the 16th century, the students of Sardinia who wanted to continue doctoral studies were obliged to fit in universities Spanish Italy or , like Pisa, Bologna, His, Pavia, Lerida or Salamanque.
The Sardinian cities, and in particular Cagliari and Sassari defended within the Parliaments of 1543 and 1553 their position for the creation of universities in the Royaume of Sardinia. The birth of the university of Sassari is related to the personality of Alessio Fontana, a civil servant of the imperial chancellery of Charles Quint and which was employed thereafter in the viceroyalty of Cagliari - where it began a correspondence with Ignace de Loyola which it asked that, in its birthplace, be created a college of Jésuite S. In his will of 1558, it allotted his goods to the city for the creation of a student college. In 1559, the Jesuits went to Sassari where it could check the conditions of the opening of an university and begin the courses in 1562.
