University of Rome “Sapienza”

The Université of Rome “Sapienza” (in Italian, Università degli studi di Roma “Sapienza” ) is one of principal the Université S Italy, the 93e in the world according to the classification carried out in 2004 by the Université Jiao Tong of Shanghai (the only Italian university in the first hundred universities) - and the 39e in Europe.

It is also called Rome I and is one of oldest in the world, having been founded by papal Bulle the April 20th 1303 (pope Boniface VIII). It is also largest of Europe and one of largest in the world (after UNAM of Mexico City) for the number of students (150 approximately 000). It comprises 21 faculties, 21 museums, 155 libraries and more than 130 departments and institutes.

The pope Boniface VIII founds this university as a Studium for ecclesiastical studies which is more under its control that those of Bologna and Padoue.

In 1431, the pope Eugene IV introduces a new tax on the wine, in order to obtain a budget for the university. The money is used to build a palate close to Eustace saint who will be then called “Sapienza”.

In 1870, it ceases being the papal university and becomes the university of the capital of the Italy. In 1935, the new university campus, planned under Benito Mussolini is finished.

The principal site is in Città Universitaria, close to the station of Rome Termini.

The current vice-chancellor, for the period 2004 - 2008 is the pr. Renato Guarini.
